When I imagined what tools I would be using this summer in the Learning by Leading Sustainable Landscapes Team, I pictured hand shovels and pruners at most. However, as the summer progressed I found myself learning how to use more powerful tools like hedge trimmers, lawn mowers, and string cutters–oh my!

After completing tasks with increasingly precarious tools, I wanted to challenge myself further by learning how to use a chainsaw. I reached out to the Arborist Team to schedule a chainsaw training session along with two of my fellow Co-Leads. We started the day with a thorough safety briefing. Then, we learned how to use the saw mill, cutting horizontal slabs through a tree trunk–truly a full body workout. And finally, with aching muscles, we cut circular cross sections of the tree called cookies. But we quickly discovered that cutting cookies isn’t as simple as it sounds. Arborists must account for a number of complex physical forces to ensure that they cut safely.

When using such powerful equipment, it’s easy to feel nervous. But learning about all of the safety mechanisms and aspects to be aware of during the process first-hand has built my confidence in operating such equipment. The Arborist Team was extremely patient and willing to answer any questions. Though the task was tedious and physically demanding, they created a safe, encouraging space for us to learn. As a Co-Leader, I strive to create a similar learning environment for my team in the coming year.

Future Sustainable Landscapes projects may require the use of powerful equipment to clear areas for new garden beds or establish new trails. I look forward to using my new skills to facilitate these projects and to demonstrate proper tool usage to my team.
