Deer Hunting Program

Cornell relies on dedicated volunteers and other conservation partners to participate in and support our highly managed deer hunting program, and annually accepts responsible hunters into the program. This is not only an opportunity to help preserve the integrity of these unique habitats, it is a privilege that is earned and maintained.

The application period is now CLOSED.

Cornell's Integrated Deer Research and

Management Program reduces chronic

deer overpopulation, associated

damage to University resources, and

health and safety risks.

Resources for Approved Hunters

Hunting areas span three different wildlife management units. Learn more about these locations, our reservation and harvest reporting system, information on Department of Environmental Conservation land adjacent to Cornell Botanic Gardens natural areas, information on deer processing, dog tracking services, and more.

Deer Management Program Closures

Natural areas that allow firearm deer hunting and management are closed to the public annually to ensure visitor safety. This year’s firearm deer seasons are November 16 through December 17, 2024 and January 13 through January 31, 2025. Other deer management activities occur February 1 - April 30, 2025.

Support This Program

Your support—of any amount—will help us continue to preserve our irreplaceable natural areas and make them available to the public for hunting, hiking, learning, and enjoyment of the great outdoors.

Hunter Reservation System Access

Approved hunters must reserve hunting locations and report hunting activity on the Botanic Gardens Deer Management Program Site Reservation System. The application period for this season is closed.
