Salvia apiana
For thousands of years, white sage has been considered a sacred plant for a multitude of culinary, medicinal, and ceremonial purposes.
White sage’s antimicrobial and strong aromatic properties are widely considered incredibly healing and powerful on physical, mental, and spiritual levels. Many Indigenous Peoples especially from present day southern and Baja California use white sage in cleansing ceremonies to fumigate homes after sickness has passed through, to neutralize energy in times of hardship, or to bring focus at the start of gatherings.
In recent years concern has been raised about the cultural appropriation, widespread commodification, overharvesting, and poaching of the white sage for non-Indigenous purposes. Learn more about how you can support white sage conservation.
