Native to North America, common elderberry has culinary, economic, and medicinal significance to countless Indigenous Peoples and their communities. The Haudenosaunee People of present-day New York State use the plant to treat numerous ailments including fever and dermatological aids. They also use the plant to make cakes and sauces that can be consumed year-round. The Cahuilla People of present-day Southern California use the juice and stems of the fruit as a dye.
