Acorus americanus
With a native range spanning North America, sweet flag is traditionally used by a wide range of Indigenous Peoples. It has been considered a panacea or “cure all” for providing relief for a long list of symptoms including fever, coughs, colds, indigestion, heart disease, toothaches, sore throat, swelling, skin rashes, and more. The Cheyenne People of the Great Plains use sweet flag in sweat lodge ceremonies, and the Ho-Chunk People of present-day Wisconsin and the Omaha Tribe of present-day Nebraska traditionally use braids of grass in ceremonies.
