When I heard that we would be learning how to climb trees this summer, I
thought back to tree climbing with my family in the backyard. Looking
back, I can’t believe I thought we would climb trees in the arboretum
without any equipment. In the end, the experience I gained far surpassed
the reckless adventure I sought as a kid.

I was a member of the Garden Ambassadors Team for the entirety of my
freshman year. I learned so much in that time about our cultivated gardens
around the Nevin Welcome Center. However, as an ambassador, I am glad
to have gained a more comprehensive understanding of all parts of our
organization. Throughout my summer as a Co-Leader, I learned more
about the F.R. Newman Arboretum, but more specifically, opportunities for
careers in arboriculture.

I discovered a passion for things I never knew existed. For example,
professional tree-climbing that arborists must perform to maintain and
manage their trees. I went into this session anticipating loads of anxiety, as
I am not historically comfortable with heights. However, I was shocked to
find myself not only comfortable in my harness as I climbed, but thrilled by
the heights I reached. Although I was certainly tired by the end, I made it to
the top of each tree that our arborist team prepared for us. I am so grateful
for the opportunity to learn from the professionals at Cornell Botanic
Gardens and to explore my career path with such guidance.

As I will soon be taking on a team of volunteers, I hope to foster an
environment where my team members can chase new heights in their
careers, as representatives of our gardens, and as learners.
