Similar to T. canadensis except for its exceptionally dark green foliage, which is particularly noticeable inwinter (DS 155). In the early 1940's we (Weston Nursery) noticed one plant with strikingly dark foliagein a group of hemlocks purchased from a nursery in southeastern MA. The winter color was black-green,although summer color was indistinguishable from the normal species. We began propagating it by grafting and first offered it for sale in our 1948 catalog. One of the less desireable features of the original plant was its narrow, open branching habit that required frequent shearing. In the 1960's we collected seed from mature trees and discovered predominantly dark winter foliage and a more uniform habit in the seedlings (DS 288).
