Description
Tree reaching 30m in height; branches horizontal, rather long and curving upwards at the tips; needles 8-15mm long, obtuse or acute with 2 distinctly white stomatal bands beneath, each with 5 lines, glossy green above with 2-3 indistinct stomatal bands. species description: Tree to 40m in its habitat, trunk with gray, deeply fissured bark, branches spreading horizontally to slightly ascending, young shoots gray-yellow to more brownish or reddish, twisted leaf cushions, buds ovate to conical, 4-6mm long, resinous, scales small, short acuminate; needles directed forward on the uppper side of the branch, loosely appressed, parted beneath, somewhat compressed, acuminate, dark green, keeled on both sides, with 1-2, occasionally 3-4 intermittent stomatal lines beneath; cones oblong-ovate, seed scales soft, leathery, ovate-cordate, split at the apex or rounded, margin serrate or undulate, horizontal on ripe cones, seeds about 10mm long with the wing. W. China, in the mountains at 3000-4000m.
