Small tree with trunk divided close to the ground and forming a spreading, flat-topped to rounded crown; very handsome with its gracefullly ascending branches. 20-30' tall, 25-35' wide. Flowers reddish purple in bud, opening to rosy-pink with a purplish tinge, 2/5 to 1/2" long, opening in April, remaining effective for2-3 weeks, borne 4-8 together, fasicled or racemose; often flowers produced on old trunks 4-8" in diameter; flowers at a young age, usually 4-6 years. New foliage reddish-purple, gradually changing to dark, often somewhat lustrous green in summer; fall color usually a poor yellow green, but can be an excellent yellow.
