Upright deciduous shrub reaching 3 m in height with reddish, glabrous twigs. Leaves reddish on new growth, broad and less acute than the type, deep green and glabrous above, distinctly bluish beneath. Flowers larger than the type, 13-15(-18) mm long, dark purple; fruits totally connate, dark red. Overallmore attractive than the species.
