Dense divaricate shrub or small tree reaching 4-6 m in height; leaves usually obovate, 5-12 cm long, usually with 2 lobes on either side separated by a deep sinus, base broadly cuneate, entire or with some bristly teeth, dark green and glabrous above, whitish-tomentose beneath, fall color yellow to reddish-brown. Fruits oval, short-stalked, acorns 1 cm long, about half enclosed in a shell-form cup.
