Description

A compact, low-growing shrub reaching 2' in height and spreading to 5' in 10 years; branches are slender and arching, leaves are willow-like, fine-textured, light green, turning a deep burgundy in autumn; flowers are pure white, 1/8"-1/4" long, borne in profuse panicles in late April into early May. 'Nikko' was selected for its horticultural merit from the Watanabe Nursery, Gotemba City, Japan by John Creech and Sylvester March of the U.S. National Arboretum. In the 1980's the nomenclature was changed to D. crenata var. nakaiana. However, 'Nikko' was determined by USNA taxonomist Frederick G. Meyer, and Roy Davidson of Bellvue, WA, to be a variant of D. gracilis. The cultivar name 'Nikko, seems to have been coined by British Nurseryman C.G. Hollett of Greenbank Nursery, Cumbria, England in 1976-77. NA 41040
