Description

Variable perennial with several subspecies. Rhizomes and roots stout. Leaves basal, usually deciduous, coriaceous, green, pedate; leaflets much divided, segments 20-45, linear lanceolate, to 13x1.5cm, hairy beneath, especially on conspicuous veins, occasionally glabrous, margins coarsely serrate; petioles to 30cm, green, purple-brown below. Inflorescence exceeding leaves, branched; flowers 3-8, conic to cup-shaped, nodding, green, to 4.5cm diameter, scented; perianth segments equal or subequal, ovate to ovate-elliptic, barely overlapping; nectaries stalked, funnel-shaped, green; anthers to 2.5mm; carpels 3-4, fused below. Follicles to 2cm, narow below; seeds dark or red-brown, ridged.
