Description
H. ‘Academy Blue Titan’ S. Chamberlain (ONIR) 1999. Plant: 56.0 in. (142 cm.) diameter, 24.0 in (61.0 cm.) high. Mound-like with a moderate growth rate. Leaf: 13.0 in. (33.0 cm.) long, 10.5 in. (26.7 cm.) wide. 16 pairs of veins. Intensely blue-green with a slightly rippled margin. Glaucous bloom on top and underneath; lightly cupped, moderately wavy, lightly corrugated, nearly round with a cordate base.Scape: ranging from 21-26 in. (53.3-66.0 cm.) in length; medium green. Flower: 1.75 in. (4.4 cm.) long, pure white, tubular; Manlius, NY: 6/5 - 6/25 - 7/15 (codes: 2 – 2 – 2). Seed: viable; pod is light green.Clump History: the original seedling, 5 years, growing in Manlius, NY. Notable Characteristics: intensely glaucous blue [parentage unknown]. Additional Registration Information: Clump History. This is a seedling which was purchased from Cross Creek Nursery, Manlius, NY in July, 1995, and planted. It was at that time about 2 years old. It has been in the same position in the ground at Academy Gardens for the past four years. Additional Information: The seeds from which this seedling was grown were open pollinated and pooled when collected. The set of possibilities for pod and pollen parent are limited to the following: H. ‘Lancifolia’, H. sieboldii, H. ‘Frances Williams’, H. ‘Blue Seer’, H. ‘Krossa Regal’, H. ‘August Moon’, H. ‘Antioch’, H. ‘Fortunei Aureomarginata’, H. Montana ‘Aureomarginata’, H. plantaginea, H. sieboldiana ‘Elegans’, H. ‘Undulata Univittata’, H. ventricosa, H. ‘Honeybells’, H. ‘Royal Standard’, and H. ‘Gold Standard’. However, it seems almost certain that the pod parent was H. sieboldiana ‘Elegans’, H. ‘Frances Williams’ or H. ‘Blue Seer’. The glaucous coating on the top side of the leaves seems heavier and more durable than that of other blue hostas in the collection. At the end of July, the coating is still very much intact while that of other hostas in the collection are nearly completely gone. The comparison group includes H. sieboldiana ‘Elegans’, H. ‘Gray Cole’, H. Hadspen Blue’, H. ‘Halcyon’, H. ‘Camelot’, H. ‘Blue Angel’, H. ‘Blue Ice’, H. ‘Blue Moon’, H. ‘Dorset Blue’, H. ‘Blue Betty Lou’, H. ‘Azure Snow’, H. ‘Salute’, H. ‘Tokudama’, H. ‘Abiqua Drinking Gourd’, H. ‘Love Pat’, H. ‘Betcher’s Blue’, H. ‘Big Daddy’, H. ‘Lee Armiger’, and numerous others. Significance of the name. The name signifies the very large size of the mature clump (Titan) and the heavy glaucous blue coating (Blue).
