Description

Plant: 40 in. (102 cm) diameter, 17 in. (43 cm) high. Leaf: 7 in. (18 cm) long, 5.5 in. (14 cm) wide; 8 pairs of veins; medium green with a margin and with a medium green petiole; moderately flat, broadly ovate with a flat base. Scape: 27-31 in. (69-79 cm) long; brownish purple. Flower: 2 in. (5 cm) long, pale lavender, medium lavender Stripes inside; tubular; Manlius, NY: 8/2-8/24-8/29. Seed: pod is nearly blackClump History: original seedling, 5 years old, Manlius, NY. Both the parent and the seedling were grown at Academy Gardens. Significance of the name. The name includes the Academy moniker to identify its origin. Nazgul is from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. The nine Nazgul were the chief servants of the dark lord, Sauron. They were more commonly known as the Black Riders. This hosta is named after them because of its nearly black seed pods.
