Description

Bare-stemmed shrub reaching 5.5' in height with leaflets held in clusters of three, those at the tip of the stems standing clear of the rest. Flowers are hidden by the foliage, are smaller than those of the suffruticosa group, with very dark, black-red maroon petals, the darkest in the genus. Winter hardy to zone 5 although it seldom blooms north of zone 7; widely used as a parent to impart dark maroon flower color.
