Description

Large shrub or small tree of open habit, with stiff, stout, rigid branches, reaching 15' to 20' in height, and 10' to 15' in width; can attain 30' in height. Foliage lustrous dark green, with fetid odor when crushed; fall color usually green, occasionally red-purple; foliage tends to be held late into the season. Flowers creamy-white, borne in late May in 3" to 6" diameter flat-topped cymes in great abundance, literally masking the bright green foliage. Fruit a 1/3" long rose-red drupe, changing to black, effective for two weeks in August through early October; fruit quickly eaten by birds, although inforescences are a handsome rose-red, and remain effective for 2 to 4 weeks after the fruits are gone.
