Description

Tree reaching about 15 m in height; bark rough on older trees, branches only thinly pubescent, yellowish, later glabrous and reddish, buds thin, resinous, nearly globose, red-brown; needles clustered, 10 to 20 mm long, usually becoming somewhat wider towards the branch tips, apex round or emarginate, but acute on young plants, glossy above, white except for the green midrib beneath; cones cylindrical except for the short, tapered tip, 4 to 7 cm long, about 2.5 cm thick, violet-purple before ripening, but also green, seed scales about 20 mm wide, bract scales as long as the seed scales, but usually somewhat exserted and reflexed, seeds obovoid, 10 mm long, violet, wings purple.
