Description
Tree, 20-40 m high, slow growing, crown conical when young, umbrella-shaped when older, limbs very strong, obliquely ascending when young, later horizontal, bark black-gray, fissured, branches short, forming plate-like tiers; needles usually dark green, stiff, 1.5-3.5 cm long, 30-40 in clusters, 4-sided, wider than high in cross section, acuminate; cones stalked, solitary, erect, barrel-shaped, 8-10 cm long and 4-6 cm wide, with protuberant tips, brown, seed scales to 5 cm wide with short pubescence on the exterior, very densely arranged, ripe cones open first in the middle, then towards the base, seed 15-18 mm long, with 25 mm long wings; native to Taurus Mts., Antitaurus and Lebanon, developing forests.
