Description
Tall tree, reaching 50 m in its native habitat; like Picea abies in many ways. Gray bark exfoliating in thin scales, young shoots yellow, glabrous to nearly so, terminal shoot very thick and short (5 cm), leafcushions with a square scar, buds narrowly conical, acute, about 8 mm long, scales loosely appressed,slightly resinous; needles "brush-like" in arrangement, very stiff and prickly, bluish-green or green, 12 to 18 (to 25) mm long, 4-sided in cross section, with 5 to 7 stomatlal lines on each side; cone scalesoblong-cylindrical, 10 to 12 cm long, seed scales leathery, apical limb round, appressed at first, laterreflexed.
