Description

Deciduous tree reaching 80' in height; leaves variable in shape, usually oblong to elliptic, to 6" long, with3 to 5 pairs of bristle-tipped lobes, or nearly entire, glabrous beneath except for tufts of hairs in axils ofveins (DS 3). Tree reaching 20 m or more in height; young shoots glabrous, buds small, acute, glabrous;leaves quite variable on the same tree, oblong to elliptic, entire or with 3 to 5 teeth on either side, these often long-acuminate, very unevenly outspread, eventually dark green and glosssy above, occasionallybrownish beneath, glabrous except for tufts of hairs in the vein axils, petiole 1.2 to 2.5 cm long; acornsnearly sessile, very similar to those of Q. rubra (DS 7).
