Description
The clone distributed under NA 57209 was purchased at Gotemba Nursery, Gotemba, Japan, by S. March, U.S.N.A. and F.P. Darke, Longwood Gardens during a 1985 expedition to Japan. This cultivar has been in cultivated in Great Britain since the late 1800's. Following 8 years of landscape and garden evaluation in the U.S., this clone was released to the American Nursery Trade in 1993. Syn.= H. macrophylla 'Mandshurica'. This clone is noted for the blackish color of the juvenile stems; flowers borne in globose cymes (mophead type), pink or blue depending on soil pH.
