Glabrous perennial reaching 2' in height; leaves linear, sheaths long; flowers few to many in heads,bracts lanceolate, epicalyx scales obcordate, aristate, usually dark purple, rarely white (DS 3) Variablespecies; the heads of magenta flowers may be borne on stems of 1' to 3' in height (DS 147).
