Description

A distinctly broad-columnar tree reaching 70' in height and 35-40' in width. Fall color is exceptional, the color starting to develop in mid-September in Lisle, Illinois, with red predominating, interspersed with green patches, the color lasting for 2 to 4 weeks. The leaf shape more closely resembles silver maple, with deeply toothed sinuses. Wood is moderately tough. Male clone (DS 597). The parent plant was located near Lake Marmo at the Morton Arboretum and was cut down in 1993 due to severe beaver damage to the trunk. The arboretum received the tree from an unknown source in the mid 1920's. Leaves are shaped like those of silver maple but are not as deeply lobed, are an attractive medium green with contrasting silver-gray undersides and colorful red petioles; no seed is produced (DS 682). Trunk resistant to frost cracking (Nancy Buley @ Frank Schmidt Nursery).
