Description
Columnar in habit reaching 20' in height after 15 to 20 years; needles lustrous dark green above, lighterbeneath; male and female clones exist. Similar to the Irish yew but more winter-hardy. Selected andintroduced by Henry Hicks; raised at former Parson's Nursery, Flushing, NY (DS 9). Narrowly columnar, about 2-3 imes taller than wide, branches ascending, long, often with the peak of the plant wider than thebase; needles radial on erect shoots, distinctly 2-ranked on the lateral shoots, 25 to 30 cm long, 3 mmwide, glossy dark green above with a raised midrib, light green beneath. Developed about 1900 in theHicks Nurseries, Westbury, NY from the seed of T. cuspidata 'Nana'; male and female clones and severalforms exist in the Trade (DS 8). A selection made by Henry Hicks' son, who was killed in WWII [accession record for 49-013].
