Description

A medium-sized tree reaching 25 m in height with a very dense crown and gray-brown, rough, fissured bark. Branches horizontal and thin with ascending tips, the young shoots thick and glabrous, brown in the first year, gray-white in the second. Needles loosely arranged, very stiff and sharp-prickly, 7-15 mm long, stout, usually radial above, somewhat parted beneath and spreading nearly vertically, 4-sided with 3-4 stomatal lines on all sides. Cones cylindrical, 3-6 cm long, green-yellow when young, glossy brownwhen ripe.
