Description

Stem 15-50cm, ribbed; bulb 2-3cm diameter, spherical, tunic papery. Leaves 15-40x1-4cm, 2-7, erect, glaucous, withering before flowering with stiff hairs on margins and lower surface. Flowers 2-3cm diameter, numerous, star-shaped in a loose umbel 10-20cm diameter; spathe 2.5cm, apiculate; pedicels to 11cm; tepals 1-2cm, purple-violet with metallic sheen, erect with thickened central veins remaining rigid after flowering; stamens included, anthers pollen and filaments dark purple. Fruit 5-8mm.
