Description

Tree reaching 30 m in height with light gray, scaly bark. Leaves obovate to oblong, 10-16 cm long, acute, rather coarsely and regularly dentate with 10-14 obtuse teeth on either side, bright green (!), and glossy above, gray-tomentose or velvety beneath, the petiole 1.5-3.5 cm long. Fruits shorter stalked than the leaves (!), the acorns oval-oblong, about 3 cm long, 1/3 enclosed by the cup, the scales on the base of the cup much thickened, the apical limb composed of stiff, fringed scales.
