Pyramidal when young developing a weakly pyramidal-oval to almost rounded outline at maturity. Plants 40-50' tall, 20-30 (50') wide; can attain 60' in height. Bark on older trunks is gray, almost beech-like; leaves look like beech or hornbeam leaves, and assume yellow, orange, and golden-brown colors in the fall. Flowers white, 3/4" in diameter, borne in 6-10-flowered flat-topped, 2-3" diameter corymbs in May; tends to flower heavily in alternate years. Fruit pinkish-red to orangish-red to scarlet, bloomy, speckled with dark lenticels, 3/8" to 5/8" long, September-October and persisting; spectacular. At its best is perhaps the handsomest mountain ash for fruit effect.
