Description

Tree reaching 10-12 m in height, occasionally a shrub, the young shoots woolly becoming glabrous by fall. Leaves broadly ovate, 6-10 cm long, thin, obtuse (!), the base broadly cuneate to round (!), lobed, occasionally pinnatisect on the basal half with 7-9 pairs of lateral veins, irregularly serrate, glossyabove, gray-tomentose beneath (not white!); inflorescences 8-10 cm wide, many-branched, petals white, oblong to lanceolate, styles 2, borne in May. Fruits ellipsoid, to 13 mm thick, somewhat longer than wide, orange-red with an erect calyx (!).
